We found to authenticate Bakelite you can use a q-tip or cotton ball with Formula 409. This won't hurt the piece but make sure you truly believe it is Bakelite before you do this because I don't know what it will do to other materials. The cotton will turn yellow if it is truly Bakelite. Another way to do this is to heat up a pin, make sure you are holding the pin with something like pliers. and the heated pin will not go into Bakelite. I am pretty new at this so I do both to confirm it is truly Bakelite!
I couldn't believe the amount of products that were made out of Bakelite. We also found dice! But, there are cameras, necklaces, bracelets, buttons, boxes, telephones,,,, so, so much! I found out that Dr. Leo Baekeland patented the process of making bakelite in 1909
