Gorham Silverplate Holloware 4.5" Candle Holders - Chantilly Collection

It's not the picture, one is polished and the other is the way we found it.

  You are seeing a pair of Gorham candlestick holders one we have polished up and the other is the way we discovered it.  These beauties were in a shed we were allowed to go "picking" in.  I found the first one and  could just see it's potential,  but didn't uncover the second for awhile after. 

Then I had a pair and I was really excited!

I love to watch the shine of the silver slowly appear. 

 But, some people LOVE the old natural look of a Vintage piece, so we decided to list them this way.

Saturday Morning Tag Sale Trip

Good morning!  It's 6:30 am and I have been up for about an hour.  There are several tag sales, Yard sales they call them down here in the South, to hit this morning.  Of course, no one is up and no one wants to get up to go with me.....!!!!  I'm  excited but a bit  nervous because I know I will end up with items I really don't want or need.  I will feel really bad if I walk up and don't buy something.

  It's like saying, "Your things aren't even worth the .50 you put it out for" 

So, I will keep you up dated as to what I found and what I just bought!

Vintage Glass 8 inch Cowboy - Cowgirl Mug

I have found several 6" Boot mugs, but haven't come across the 8".
I think this would be a cute idea for a soon to be bride's bachelorette or the groom's bachelor party.  You don't HAVE to be from Texas to fall in love with this really fun 8" cowboy / cowgirl boot mug.  Or it could just be used as a vase.

Bavarian Chocolate Cake Recipe ~ Let's Bake Something!

I haven't added a recipe in awhile and the picture of this cake looks so good, it's like I can almost smell the yummy chocolate.  So, here we go!

Bavarian Chocolate Cake

Preparation time: 20 mins.

Oven Temp: 350 degrees F

Baking Time: 1hr

For 1 cake, 8 Servings, you will need:


6 oz. semisweet chocolate, dark
4 oz. chocolate milk
2 Tbsp. water
1 cup butter, room temp
2 cups granulated sugar
4 eggs
1 Tbsp. orange juice
1 Tbsp. Grated orange peel
1/2 tsp. salt
2 1/2 cups all - purpose flour
1/1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup butter milk or sour cream
Powdered sugar to dust


Preparation:

1.   In medium sauce pan melt together chocolate and water, stirring constantly.

2.   In large bowl cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3.   Add eggs, one at a time. Blend in orange juice and orange peel.

4.   Stir in cooled chocolate

5.   Sift together flour, salt and baking soda

6.   Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk or sour cream to egg-butter mixture, blending well.

7.   Pour batter into a well-greased and floured tube pan, about 10 inches

8.   Bake at 350 degrees F for about 1 hour or until pick inserted in the center comes out clean

9.   Let cake cool in pan for 15 minutes.  Turn out onto rack and let cake cool completely. 

10. Dust with powdered sugar.

11. Serve with fresh fruit

Couldn't pass this up. No way. A set of 6 mugs and one pitcher, made in Japan and marked on the bottom of each piece. The design is the same on all pieces -- couples in various poses doing various things while musicians do other things. WHAT everyone is doing, I'll leave up to you. A tree god is watching and laughing over the whole show. Hm...what a conversation, piece, yes?!

The colors are bright (spring green, royal blue, ochre, burgundy), and the finish is shiny on all pieces. There are a couple of chips on the undersides of the bottoms of the mugs which are not visible until you flip them over. The pitcher has 2 small chips on the underside of the lip (see pic) but still pours fine.

Amazing collection for only $40.00, you are helping the animals in need and getting yourself something by helping!

Elizabeth Taylor February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011

I can't believe I just read that Elizabeth Taylor has passed away. She was only 79.

I was happy to read that her family was there with her.

She is part of a short list of actresses who have won two Academy Awards for Best Actress.

She appeared in more than 50 films.

Her performances in "Butterfield 8" won her an Oscar,

and  I just watched for the first time about 2 weeks ago .

She was gorgeous in this movie, well to me always, and played a high class call girl. 

If you have see it you will understand when I say it was not the ending I was hoping for,
but I was glad I watched it anyway.

I always love watching her movies.  She was so very natural in everything she did and made me smile.

She will remain, in my mind, as one of the most beautiful, classy, elegant, talented actresses of all times!

My prayers go out to her family and friends.

Antique 1930's Signed Hand-colored Photo~ Mt. Katahdin by J. C. Bicknell

 

This photo is a landscape of Mt. Katahdin in Maine. It measures 4" x 6" and is in it's original frame which measures 6.5" x 8.5". The back of the picture says 'From Bill Haddock 1936'. The original hand colored print is in great condition, as it has been under glass since the 1930's, but the matte has a stain and the back paper has been torn. Diamond Point Pattern, Indiana Glass Footed Candy Bowl with Lid -

Oh the days I would go over to Grammy's house she would have her candy dish filled just for our visit!  I also remember candies at my Great Aunt's house. One night my sister and I were sleeping over. She let us have one of her candies.  She told me to suck on the candy and not to chew it.  Well, of course I chewed it and my teeth were stuck together!  I was very nervous, and didn't want my aunt to know.  I don't remember if I did tell her or how I finally got my jaw unstuck!

Disappointing Day of Picking

Well, my husband and I headed out on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon. It’s always an adventure and I am anxious at what we will uncover on our little journeys. We stumbled across about 10 different AVON Cologne Bottles. They were so uniquely different. There was : a domino, Steam train, glass bottle with a ship, cars, trucks and so on. Well, not knowing much about AVON, just that people do collect it. We scooped up our "find" and went home.

I was getting a headache from the remaining fragrances filling up the car. Windows now open we made it home and started our history research.

Oh Gosh ~Everybody has these AVON bottles. Loads of them,  in boxes, LOTS, collections, 
Oh well, you win some and lose some. Now, I need to get them out of my house because I can still smell them!

Collectible Antique Book , 1745 The Orations of Marcus Tullius Cicero - Volume 1 Rebound

This just blows me away!  It is a book from 1745!  I never thought I would come across a book this old.  I
have one, here under Books, from 1898 ~ But to turn the pages of a book from 1745 is just crazy to me!
We have discovered that it has been rebound, you can see the difference between the pages and cover here in these photos.

First Edition John Steinbeck Hard Cover - Cannery Row 1945 With Dust Jacket

Boy, was my heart jumping when I discovered this John Steinbeck First Edition ~

With the Dust Jacket no less!  I almost kept this one for myself.  

~ He won the Nobel Prize for Literature ~ 1962

~ He wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning novel  The Grapes of Wrath ~ 1939

Just some of Steinbeck's works include:

 Cup of Gold(1927),  Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath,

East of Eden, In Dubious Battle,

Travels With Charley, Cannery Row, The Wayward Bus .... the list goes on and on....
John Steinbeck died in New York City on December 20, 1968, he was only 66.

The street that Steinbeck described as "Cannery Row" in the novel, once named Ocean View Avenue, was renamed Cannery Row in honor of the novel, in 1958.

The town of Monterey has commemorated Steinbeck's work with an avenue of flags depicting characters from Cannery Row, historical plaques, and sculptured busts depicting Steinbeck and Ricketts.

 A cute bit of history about the Cannery Row Book, The 1950 Tweety Bird cartoon "Cannery Row" and the 1967 Tom and Jerry cartoon short "Cannery Rodent"  have their titles based on a play-on-words of this book's name.
