Top 10 List EARTH DAY 2011, written by my 16 year old daughter We can all learn something from her!

TOP 10 LIST for EARTH DAY 2011.
Our daughter won a speech contest 3 years ago (age 13) the topic was, WATER SHEDS.  She did all of her own  research and was actually educating us on our water sheds and what each of us could do to save our planet.  She has also become a vegetarian and has been doing so for about 4 years now.  Again, she did her own research and made this decision!
This is her Top 10 List for us to follow and at 16 years old we can all learn something from her!

EARTH DAY 2011
 TOP 10 LIST

1. NEVER throw cigarette butts out the window-they do not break down, they pollute water and hurts animals and plants
2. Do not litter paper products: Paper may be bio-degradable, but it often contains chemicals that are bad for ground water, and add stress to the Earth
3. Don't idle! As it gets warmer, waiting in the car with the AC cranked will seem almost inevitable. Don't do it. It will add exhaust of toxic gases to the air that could be avoided.
4. Do you business in the shower. Gross, right? But very earth friendly. If you (and family members) urinate while taking a shower, you can save nearly 100 gallons of water a day.
5. Do not use chemicals for planting. It pollutes ground water, streams and any near by bodies of water.
6. Don't let your animals defecate close to moving bodies of water. The bacteria in feces with harm animals in the water, and contaminate animals and plants who use the water.
7. Plant! one of the easiest ways to help the earth is just to plant. Vegetation provides oxygen that not only do we breathe, but can trap pollution.
8. Do laundry in large loads. The more laundry you do at a time actually saves more water and energy. So, avoid small loads or just washing one thing.
7. Recycle!! I don't understand why it is so hard for people to just keep a box in their kitchens for plastics, paper/cardboard products, and bottles.
8. Pick up trash. Yes, this may not be your garbage, and it would be much easier to just leave it. But, helping any can help the earth.
9. Cut apart used soda rings. The plastic rings that hold cans together can suffocate and kill small animals that get their heads caught. Simply cut the rings apart before recycling it, of Course
10. Walk more. The world is beautiful, but we often miss that through the blur of speeding away in a car.
Hop, skip, jump, run, dance, bike,
it doesn't matter what age you are because ~
Whatever you do, it helps not only the Earth, but you too!

-Love and Peace,
           Meredith

P.S.  Please ADOPT your pets!
 It's a WIN WIN situation!!
I am so proud of her! If we could all just do one or two of these a day we would be saving our planet for her and our future generations!
